My three-day weekend was full of dirt. Lots and lots of dirt. Free dirt, expensive dirt, and dirt from my own property.
First on Saturday, I made three trips to the local dump to load up on free dirt to fill in the rest of our expanded garden beds. Then my partner and I went to the hardware store to pick up some nutrient-rich dirt to mix in with the free dirt, as well as pick up some other supplies like seeds, plants, and wood chunks for smoking meat. Personally, that was enough dirt and physical labor for a whole weekend, but then on Sunday I spent a big chunk of the day digging up the grass and dirt in a corner of our front yard that we want to transform into a flower garden. I then spent a part of my Monday off transplanting the sod I'd dug up onto a bare patch in our back yard.
Unfortunately, none of this is actually listed on our Quarantine Projects list so I don't get the satisfaction of checking it off as complete. Oh well!
I also went on the offense with some hornets that seem to be living under our roof, though I can't get a visual on their hive so as to deal a certain end to their time endangering the path to our front door. Oh, and we got our new backyard herb and vegetable garden planted for the season! This is a separate garden full of herbs and other things we might want to quickly grab and add to a meal (like lettuce and spinach) as opposed to our main garden on the side of the house that will be grow all the major vegetables.
Even better is that to help with our vegetable gardens in the coming years, we were able to pick up a compost barrel for free from someone in our neighborhood who wanted to get rid of theirs!
It wasn't all work, mind you. Yesterday in particular was a more laid-back part of the extended weekend, underscoring just how needed that day off was. My daughter had her 18 month checkup with the doctor, who reported that she's doing well in her development and health! We got a bit more time to relax and play during the day rather than working on house projects, and then to top it all off, we got to do a 5-minute porch family photoshoot with a photographer who was in town offering the service in lieu of her normal studio work (given social distancing keeps her from using her studio right now).
In dreary pandemic news, some states are reopening despite the US reporting its deadliest day for COVID-19 yet. I can't find a single health organization like the CDC or WHO advising this, so I feel justified in calling those in favor of the easing of restrictions "fidgety idiots." I get it, you miss your favorite restaurant or hairdresser or whatever, but those things can come back while the lives of your loved ones cannot. To put the record-breaking number of deaths into perspective, 2,996 people died in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001–only 87 more than died from COVID-19 in the US on May 1st, and this is happening and growing literally every single day. At least my state and employer seems to be keeping its head on straight for now.
Stay healthy and sane!
